Sacred Heart, true to the Sacred name it bears, has always embrace the 'most insignificant' among us, the impoverished, and above all, the immigrant, with no question asked, just a simple word of 'Welcome' -then to the Germans, now to the Latinos. In 1881 parishioners greeted one another on Sunday morning with: "Guten Morgen!" Later it became "Good Morning!" and more recently we hear "¡Buenos Dias!" Franciscan presence acknowledges the value of language and culture, especially that of the immigrant.

27 years after the founding of this German speaking parish on the Eastside of St. Paul in 1881, the Franciscan came to Sacred Heart Church on September 12,1909. This parish became an example of enormous colaboration as the School Sister of Notre Dame to staff the school in 1882.
​
When the Latino community looked to have a parish on the Eastside that would offer ministry in Spanish, at the request of the Archdiocese, Sacred Heart became the designated parish. After years of sharing a church building and some office space, we decided to share our lives and our faith, and during a beautiful Liturgy on the Feast of Pentecost, May 1997, the union of our two communities became a reality.

The last Mass presided by a Franciscan priest was in August 2016. Father Eugene Michel, O.F.M. was in this parish for 12 years. The Franciscan Order can not send a new priest, thanks to the Archdiocese we have a Diocesan priest with a Franciscan spirit, Father Edison Galarza, who understands how to guide two different communities united in one Faith.

Sagrado Corazón, fiel al nombre sagrado que lleva, siempre ha abrazado a 'los más marginados' en medio de nosotros, los pobres y sobre todo, a los inmigrantes, simplemente con la palabra sencilla de '¡BIENVENIDOS! en aquel tiempo a los alemanes y ahora a los latinos.

27 años después de la fundación de esta parroquia en 1881, y cuyos feligreses eran de Alemania, los Franciscanos llegarón a la Iglesia Sagrado Corazón el 12 septiembre de 1909. Esta parroquia se convirtio en un ejemplo de colaboración con la Escuela de las Hermanas de Notre Dame con el staff de la escuela en 1882.

Cuando la comunidad latina buscaba una parroquia que ofrecería un ministerio pastoral en español, a la petición de la Arquidiócesis, la parroquia del Sagrado Corazón fue elegida. Después de unos años de haber compartido espacio en la iglesia y en la oficina, juntos tomamos la decisión de compartir nuestras vidas y nuestra fe, y , durante una liturgia hermosa con la ocasión de la Solemnidad de Pentecostés en mayo de 1997, la unión de las dos comunidades se hizo realidad.

La última misa presidida por un sacerdote Franciscano fue en agosto del 2016. El Padre Eugenio Michel, O.F.M. estuvo en esta parroquia por 12 años. La orden Franciscana no pudo enviar a un nuevo sacerdote, gracias a la Arquidiócesis tenemos un sacerdote Diocesano con un espiritu Franciscano, el Padre Edison Galarza, quien entiende como guiar dos diferentes comunidades en una sola Fe.
